Miyajima-bori Making Experience
Miyajima-bori, or Miyajima carving, developed during the late Edo period, becoming a noted product of the island in the Meiji period. Pictures of birds, flowers, seasonal images, or scenes of Miyajima are delicately carved into rice scoops, trays, confectionary containers, or other objects. Noted for how the natural quality of the wood is drawn out, with fine, realistic carvings, these handicrafts become even more elegant and lustrous over time.
Here, under the guidance of instructors, you can carve your own pattern into a round tray (15 cm diameter) and then apply color.
You can, of course, take your finished tray back home with you.
