Takehara Area

Takehara is known as the Little Kyoto of Aki (the historic name of Hiroshima), which comes from its history as a manor for Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto in the Heian period (794-1185). The city is symbolized by the charming and quiet Historic District, selected as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. Even today, stately homes built with the prosperity gained from salt marshes and trade remain as they were in days gone by. In particular, the former Morikawa Residence, built with wealth made from salt farm operatios, is an example of the high-quality home construction of the Taisho period (1912-1926). The residence was built around 1913 and today, the grand residence remains, comprised of a main room, annex (hanare zashiki), tea room, earthen-walled storehouse, and more.
