Mitarai Historic District

Mitarai flourished in the Edo period (1603-1868) as a portside town where cargo ships would stop to wait for favorable tides and winds. The area holds a special charm and is home to many buildings and sites that remain as they were since the mid-to-late Edo period, including merchant houses large and small, tea houses, inns for sailors, shrines, temples, and more. Since its founding in the mid-17th century, through the approximately 200 years of history through the Edo period, and up to the early Showa era (mid-1920s-1930s), Mitarai served as a transit port and hub of sea transport on the Seto Inland Sea. It has changed and developed with the times, and you can find evidence of this even today. In 1994, it was designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings.
